Malteser Werke is a charity providing social services, founded in 1989. Its focus is on helping young people and people with addiction problems, as well as schools and care facilities for refugees.
The charity’s work with Linguarum so far has mostly involved expanding the range of languages for its multilingual orientation app, ‘Malte’. The app provides residents of Malteser Werke accommodation with useful information about their accommodation as well as the town or city they are staying in.
Because the app is location-specific, the information it offers needs to be regularly expanded on and updated. The ‘Malte’ app is currently used in 18 Malteser Werke facilities in four German federal states:
‘Malte is available in a total of 17 languages to provide the information available to residents of our accommodation in their own language wherever possible. Users open our app up to 1,000 times a month across our 18 facilities. We have also commissioned translations of weekly schedules and facility site maps. This is not only useful for the Malte app, but also for the day-to-day running of our facilities.’
Malteser Werke has supported an array of municipalities for more than 30 years now. The charity runs around 50 facilities around Germany to help with migration work.
‘We have more than 50 facilities, and all of them are for refugees. This is alongside more than 80 facilities where we are currently housing refugees from Ukraine. We are working on offering ‘Malte’ there too.’
Since 2020, we have translated more than 850,000 words for Malteser Werke’s various locations. The source and target files are mostly produced in XLIFF format, which is particularly useful for importing and exporting without having to convert files. Our specialist translators take existing terminology databases into account as they work on the projects. These databases were specially produced for Malteser Werke in all 17 languages to guarantee that terminology is used consistently in translations.
We regularly translate from German into English, Spanish, Macedonian, French, Russian, Somali, Farsi, Amharic, Ukrainian, Serbian, Turkish and Kurdish. As well as translations, Linguarum’s team also provides Malteser Werke with proofreading services.
‘The great degree of flexibility and the ease of contacting the project managers allowed us to make changes to our projects, sometimes at extremely short notice. We have also always been satisfied with the quality.’
